National Nonprofit Awards Assemblyman Jamel Holley a “State Legislator of the Year” for his Advocacy of Babies

On May 2, to mark National Keeping Babies Safe Day, Assemblyman Jamel Holley (D-20th Dist.) will receive the “State Legislator of the Year” award for his advocacy for babies in New Jersey. Keeping Babies Safe (KBS) will honor Holley for his passion and dedication to the Warren-based organization and, specifically, for his recent work to pass a state law that educates parents about safe sleep.

unnamed-2.jpgKBS, a Warren-based nonprofit organization, launched an awareness campaign earlier this year to promote safe sleep practices and products for babies. The campaign culminates with the National Keeping Babies Safe Day on May 2, in which Holley, other lawmakers, donors, volunteers and sponsors will be honored.

“I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with Keeping Babies Safe on legislation in New Jersey that protects our most fragile population,” Holley said. "Parents are unknowingly putting their children at risk of being injured or dying because they don’t know how to use a crib properly. Our law will help ensure that mothers and fathers are aware of the latest in crib safety when they take their babies home from the hospital or birthing center."

The law (A-1355/S-2963) requires the state Department of Health to prepare and make available on its website information about crib safety, including, but not limited to, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission ban on the sale of traditional drop-side cribs and the dangers of using traditional drop-side cribs that are still in people’s homes.

"We were thrilled that Assemblyman Holley recognized the need for this law and worked so closely with us to make it happen," said KBS founder Joyce Davis. “KBS will forever be grateful for all the Assemblyman has done to help drive this organization’s legislative agenda in Trenton.”

Holley says that he looks forward to finding more ways in which to promote safe sleep practices for babies in New Jersey. “KBS is one of those special organizations that is on the front lines, fighting daily to ensure that there are safe baby products on the market and that parents know all they can about safe sleep practices. I am immensely proud of the work of KBS, and it is an honor to be recognized by such a group of dedicated people. They are the ones who should be winning awards.”
